You can't avoid him if you're on social media: Yungblud. What is so fascinating about the 28-year-old Brit that thousands make the pilgrimage to his concerts, sometimes wearing pink socks and getting black heart tattoos?
Vienna on a cool October evening. The queue of music fans stretches over several rows of houses. Some have been waiting for hours, the hardcore fans have even spent the night here. I talk to some of them about their passion and get a little insight into the world of the "Black Hearts Club", as the followers of Yungblud call themselves. To understand why so many people of all ages are fascinated by him, you have to take a closer look at his career.
Dominic Richard Harrison (born August 5, 1997) comes from the small town of Doncaster, around 300 kilometers north of London. He has a good relationship with his parents, especially his mother. She dyed his hair as a child and always stood behind him. Unfortunately, his teachers were not so open-minded back then and he says that he was bullied by teachers and pupils during his school years. Since his childhood, he has suffered from ADHD (attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder), depression and anxiety. In an interview, he says that he had suicidal thoughts at the age of thirteen. He found a place of refuge in his father and grandfather's guitar store. His grandfather Rick Harrison († April 2023) claimed to have performed several times with rock legends T-Rex. Oasis have also bought their instruments in his store. Dom, as he is also known, spent a lot of time there and also got his hands on his first guitar. When he was just three years old!
A new life in London
As a young adult, he tells his parents that he wants to go to London to study at ArtsEd (a well-known performing arts school). So, at around sixteen1 he moved out of home and shared an apartment with a flatmate. The 75 pounds rent was paid by his parents. During this time, he tried out a lot of things. He often didn't come home for days, tried drugs and tried to find his sexual identity. He dropped out of his acting, dancing and singing studies after a short time because it "wasn't right for him". However, it wasn't all for nothing, as he made several guest appearances in the British soap "Emmerdale" and Disney's The Lodge.
But his passion for music never left him. He worked in a pub for a living and shared his songs online. This also gave him his first chance to prove himself in the business: However, the gigs on offer didn't go the way Dominic had imagined. He was muzzled and had to rewrite some passages of text that were important to him in order to be "politically correct". He couldn 't accept this and so he started from scratch again.
Yungblud is created
Around 2017, he invented the character "Yungblud". This came about because he was always called "young blood" by other people in the music business. After all, he wasn 't even twenty at the time. The Brit was not afraid of anything and even played in almost empty pubs. However, he didn't let this discourage him and released his debut single "King Charles" in April 2017. This song caught the attention of Tommas Arnby from Locomotion Entertainment. The collaboration with him was made for Yungblud. Arnby specialized in artists who were not necessarily "radio-friendly" (because of their lyrics or musical style).
Thanks to a few gigs in England and a lot of his songs on streaming platforms, he finally caught the attention of the USA. He was asked to perform on "School Night". This format has already helped Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa to become more popular. Yungblud used his time in New York to record a few songs in the Universal Music building. And to pull off an ingenious marketing coup: He asked a boy from the Locomotion team to walk around the building excitedly and ask everyone if they had heard of the up-and-coming young artist Yungblud. In the end, the whole building was talking about him.
Behind the scenes at School Night, Yungblud was a bundle of nerves. His nervousness was so bad that he even threw up backstage. Nevertheless, he delivered a great performance, which contributed to a record deal with Geffen/Interscope Records at the end of 2017. This was followed by interviews, magazine covers and reports about the up-and-coming artist.
On the road to success
The first album "21st Century Liability" was released in July 2018. By this time, he had already experienced the downsides of being a musician. Paparazzi ambushed him and unabashedly asked him about his love life. He says of the time: "I loved traveling around the world, but I was still fucking depressed." Yungblud also made many collaborations during this time. He released music with Halsey, Travis Barker and Dan Reynolds (Imagine Dragons), among others.
His commitment was rewarded with the first award nominations. During the difficult Covid period for many, he showed creativity in order not to lose contact with the fans. He invented a new format: a livestream called "The Yungblud Show". Some time later, he chatted with fellow musicians and fans on the BBC "Yungblud Podcast". From October 2020, there was another episode every week. In the following years, he released several new singles and albums.
Yungblud organizes its own festival
Yungblud had often complained about the extremely overpriced ticket prices in the media. In August 2024, he put his words into action. He organized his own music festival with very moderate ticket prices. The "Bludfest " stage belonged to musicians such as Lil Yachty, Soft Play, The Damned and, of course, Yungblud himself. There was also a guitar store, a tattoo tent and a meeting tent where fans could meet and make friends. There was also a replica of the bar where he stood behind the tap at the beginning of his career (including home-brewed beer!). The festival was a great success and so Yungblud decided to expand it. Bludfest in Germany (Hamburg) is already confirmed for 2026. The fans hope that it will also come to other European cities.
His performance of the Black Sabbath song "Changes" at a festival in Birmingham in July 2025 gave him a huge boost in popularity. He had been asked by the wife of his friend and idol Ozzy Osborne to play it for him. During the event, Ozzy said his final farewell to the stage. The legendary rock star died shortly afterwards. Yungblud is regarded by many as his successor.
The Brit lets it rip on stage
Yungblud recently opened his own store in London, worked with rock icons Aerosmith and was nominated for three Grammys (2025). He also remains true to himself. He sometimes appears in pink socks or a skirt. Eyeliner and nail polish are just as much a part of Yungblud as his topless performance and his favorite word "fuck". He seeks contact with the audience by repeatedly going into the crowd and sometimes even stage diving. Yungblud has no fear of contact and sometimes brings fans on stage to play guitar to one of his songs (Fleabag). He smokes during gigs, kisses his guitarist and encourages the audience to organize a moshpit2. The 28-year-old doesn't let anyone tell him what to do - and is celebrated for it. Incidentally, he also likes to do this with the audience after concerts.
What do the fans - and the opponents - say?
Fans love his closeness and authenticity. In conversation, they say that they feel understood by him. Confirmed that they can be who they are. They don't have to pretend. His fans (at least at the concert in Vienna) are a colorful mix. There is a self-confessed, proud trans woman standing next to a couple in love, two people in their mid-sixties waiting to get in as well as a group of teenagers. Yungblud simply brings people together.
Of course, the dissenting voices should not be completely ignored. There are discussions in online forums as to whether he isfaking his punk persona. Some criticize his behaviour (swearing and smoking), although ironically this authenticity is exactly what the fans celebrate him for. The words "cringe" and "overrated" are also frequently used.
Conclusion: The young Brit hits the nerve of the times. He is cheeky, extremely energetic and gives the fans the feeling that they are part of something bigger. He comes across as authentic, gives interviews in his broad English accent and puts his money where his mouth is (as with the ticket prices). Whether he is "fake", as some people claim, is not for me to judge. In any case, he delivers a great show and leaves the audience with a smile. In conversation, one fan described him as the "only real rock star of this generation" - and probably hit the nail on the head.
A few interesting facts about the artist:
- Yungblud is not particularly happy when he is called "Dominic". After all, he was always called that by his mother as a child when he got into trouble with her.
- He believed for a long time that Rod Steward was his grandfather. His grandmother had told him so.
- He has a black heart tattooed on each middle finger. One completely black and one broken black. That explains the name "Black Hearts Club".
- Yungblud was hit by a car in Paris. This made him rethink his life.
- He suffers from asthma and always has his inhaler with him.
- After his concerts, he meets his fans, signs autographs and sometimes even goes partying with them
- He is very generous and sometimes gives away guitars to the audience.
- In the early days in London, he had various flatmates - including Lewis Capaldi.
- He broke his ankle on stage (Houston, October 2018) and was back on stage the next day in a cast and wheelchair.
Note:
Of course, this is only a brief summary of the milestones in his career. It is by no means complete!!!
1 There are different statements here. Some sources say he was 15, others say he was 16.
2 A circle within the audience where people bump into each other, bump into each other and just have fun.
